Melbourne music fans were treated to a surprise free gig from one of the hottest popstars in the world on Monday morning.

As part of an iHeartRadio awards show, Ed Sheeran performs a surprise show in a Melbourne laneway.

Ed Sheeran, who is in town for a series of sold-out concerts at Etihad Stadium, stopped by Hosier Lane just after 10am to perform his chart-topping single Perfect in front of screaming fans.

The appearance wasn’t entirely altruistic. The singer was nominated for a number of awards at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in London including male artist of the year, song of the year for Shape of You (which he won) and best lyrics for Perfect.

iHeartRadio had been promoting Sheeran as one of the performers at the event, but with his touring commitments he had to appear via satellite and played his part from Hosier Lane.

After a couple of takes, Sheeran took off, wishing everyone a “good rest of your day… I’m gonna go back to bed.”

He will perform the last of his four Melbourne shows at Etihad Stadium tonight.
